He's a high-ranking mechanic in the Galactic Federation, so it could be somewhat questioned as to what John Tanaka was doing in F-ZERO. His skills there transitioned well in F-ZERO in the form of the Wonder Wasp. John Tanaka is someone who also has harbored feelings for Jody Summer, another member of the Federation (or Ms. Federation herself). He mostly entered to protect her, but hopes to propose to her when she wins.

The Wonder Wasp is a machine that seems to skate. It shares the handling of the White Cat, but its grip and body level are both poor. The boost level is highly exceptional. It is simply incredible as to how the Wonder Wasp can never seem to win. It's among the light machines, weighing in about 900 kg. (So, does a 1330 kg White Cat need protection?)
